Lecture Day

I went in to Portland this afternoon to listen to a lecture and an artist talk. In the White Stag building, the U of O's Portland campus in Old town., art historian Glenn Adamson gave a free lecture co-sponsored by the museum and the University of Oregon's School of Architecture and Allied Arts. Here is what DK Row of the Oregonian had to say "Adamson, the deputy head of research at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, is a challenging voice in the art world, championing craft as a force of its own, not a marginal practice on the art world fringe. His recent book, "Thinking Through Craft," articulated some of his ideas. Here's what Amazon.com says about it:

"At a time when technical skill has been widely dismissed or outsourced in the production of art, Glenn Adamson crucially adds an entire spectrum of handcrafted objects to the creative history of the post-war era. And at a time when theoretical frameworks have stagnated, these objects, in his hands, bring with them a fresh and sophisticated set of interpretive perspectives."

It was a dense and thought provoking talk and I will get his book for the local library.

After viewing two art galleries on the east side of town I went to a third 23 Sandy gallery to hear

Mark Tompkins speak on Mixed Media Pitfalls and Rewards of doing the Unexpected. It sounded good to me and right up my area of interest. I learned when I was at B Roger's gallery enjoying Michele Bieler's fine show that Tompkins is a black and white photographer and poet. not that related to how I think of mixed media. However I do enjoy poetry and and I did begin life as a photographer in high school. I'm glad I went as Mark is a talented image maker and creates moving visual connections with his poem fragments.

Here are two more of what I consider mixed media.

Small Pink 6x6

Small Blue Gold 6x6

These are two more in the series of now 15 plus paintings exploring the similar divisions of space and using different color palettes. they range from 6x6 to 24x24.

Thank you for reading and let me know what you think by leaving a comment.

Catching Up

I had a fair week in spite of a slight head cold and my failure to get something in this spot twice in one week. On Sunday I spent several hours in Whelchs at Wy'east Bookshop & Gallery painting on several canvases to demonstrate some hows and whys of my approach to painting.
It was a fine day and I enjoyed talking to several women who watched the paintings be worked on. More folks stopped in about the time Sandy, the owner, set out a wonderful appetizer tray.
what could be better that art and conversation followed by food, wine and conversation. Thank you Sandy for all your efforts in promoting and presenting the Arts for the folks on Mount Hood. Unfortunately like an idiot I forgot to get pictures at the event. I can show you the canvases I prepared. I spread sub-floor leveling compound mixed with Quikrete acrylic bonding adhesive in a similar design on several sizes of canvas.

Canvases with the texture drying.

Here are three that I worked on at the mountain and did more today in the studio.
Beneath, a final version (I hope). 18x18

For now its called Blues v5. 18x18

Lastly a smaller version on the theme.

Blue Top 6x6

Once again thank you for looking and reading, and remember comments are always welcome

Color Me Yellow

I had a busy time last week not in the studio until Friday when I started "fooling around " again. I did some sorting, organizing and other avoidance activities. designed to make me feel productive while thinking about what to paint next and what will I talk about on Sunday the 15th. I'm doing a painting demo(1-3) and then artist's talk at Wy'east Bookshop and Gallery in Welches, on Mount Hood. I will work on finishing a painting and may start some small wine bottle scenes. If you are in the area please stop by.
On Saturday I decided to do some Yellow paintings and put out 2 18x18 and every yellow paint I had. I started by covering them both completely in various yellows, when it was slightly dry I put in an off centered cruciform shape in various values of phthalo blue and added accents of blue-green and a purple-red. I let them dry and went off to see the Beaverton Artists Showcase, a good juried show. On Sunday when I got back in the studio the starts suggested a floral painting and this is what I had for one at the end of the day.

Version1 from Sunday.

On Monday I wasn't that pleased with either painting and reworked both they are now each more like this:

Version2
I I brought more light into the "flowers" with white and yellow, it's close to done so I'll look at it on and off over the next few weeks for any finishing touches.
As ever thanks for looking and let me know what you think.

Self Renewal

12x12 Self 09

I missed last week, to many distractions from painting and the time to photograph, edit and post. Or I'm just not organized enough and basically lazy. I have been spending time entering some shows and art fairs for this summer. I took a break the last 2 painting sessions to work on
the self portrait shown above. It's a good change of pace and a record of time, attitude and ability as I go through the years.
I also reworked the painting Beneath shown below and the more I look at it I have some further changes in mind. The question of how to portray these ideas is one of the things that keeps me

Beneath v2 18x18
painting and learning about new media to express them. My motto for the month:

"A painting is never finished - it simply stops in interesting places. "- Paul Gardner

As ever thank you for looking and let me know what you think. If you want to purchase any of these paintings just email me.
