April 22

Computers and I have not gotten on well today. I just lost the image for this post and will have to up load it form home later. The Blogger editor is/was acting up and deleted it when I tried to move it. The various computers I used today at home earlier and at work have dropped the Internet connection and needed rebooting. It is a tech world conspiracy to make me even less efficient than my usual self.
I have a  new painting to show in the every growing bar code series..

Willamette Valley Clouds, Sunset  18x18 Mixed Media

I will be getting organized and packed for the the first out door show of the year, The Saratoga Rotary Art Fair in California. It is in it's 50 something year on May 2 south and east of San Francisco. The rest of my summer is up in the air as I am wait listed for several of the larger shows here in the west including Salem and  Art in the Pearl.
Wish me luck and let me know what you think of the painting  or any other topic.

Rental Sales Gallery Spring Opening

April 16th was the opening night reception for new work accepted by the gallery.
It is always a festive event with artists, volunteers, and art patrons scoping everything out.
Here I am under one of my paintings Autumn Reflections at the top:

Spring WSO

Sunrise Willamette Valley by Bruce Ulrich 2010

This painting will be in the Watercolor Society of Oregon spring show opening in Gold Beach this Saturday, April 10.  I have a 25% chance of receiving an award since  20 of the 80 selected paintings are so honored. If i remember rightlly there were over 350 paintings submitted to the juror. Here is how I framed the painting as a vertical 24x20.

Matted  24x20  of Sunrise Willamette Valley
the painting is 10x10

I liked the black background since the mat had to be white or off white for this show..
This is the way I present most of the painting I have done on paper that are square. It is easier for people to find standard size rectangular frames for the matted work I offer at art shows.

I started this post in the middle of last  week and my HP laptop developed the blue screen of death; trying, not yet successfully, to solve this issue has taken up much of my computing time.
I was able to remove my documents and I am waiting on restore disks for  the company.

The Watercolor Society of Oregon Spring show opened on Saturday in Gold Beach Oregon and alas I heard from a friend that this painting was not among the 20 awarded works.
It is still good to be chosen for the show by the juror Stephen Quiller.
Let me know what you think about the matting choice or anything else and thank you for looking.

Spring Show

In April the Rental Sales Gallery of the Portland Art Museum has their Spring Show. The gallery artists are invited to submit up to 3 new works and 2 may be chosen. The gallery represents over 200 artists in Oregon and Washington. The Spring and Fall openings are juried by 5 folks from the Museum and the board while replacement work sees a monthly panel of 3. So having 2 paintings selected for the this Spring intake feels great. These are the paintings:

The other painting is:
Autumn Reflections 48x48 Acrylic on Canvas

The Rental Sales Gallery is a good place for artists and for the public to support local artists. If you are a member of the art museum you can rent work for up to 6 months to try it in your home or business, if you like the art you may apply the rental fee to the purchase price. Many local business firms have a changing art display at their offices and growing permanent collection too.
If you are in Portland on April 16th stop in for the opening from 5 to 8 pm, you'll meet many local artists.
Thanks for looking and please feel free to leave a comment about this or a suggestion or question on what might interest you. You are also free to share this with your friends.

Notable Quotes

Once again I let life get in the way of posting updates and information here. I did spring cleaning and reorganization of the studio for a wine tasting a friend ran. It is good have a clean space to start messing up. This month has also been busy working out of the studio in my other field, so starts are plentiful but paintings to show are few.
Even when studio time is limited or non existent I read about or study some art daily, and I enjoy collecting quotes by or about art and artists.

There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. you can remove all traces of reality.
- Pablo Picasso

You would be wise not to finish a painting. Wayne Thiebaud

I make pictures and someone comes in and calls it art. Willem

de Kooning

DEGAS SAID OF WHISTLER ' HE DRAWS BY DISTANCES AND NOT BY THICKNESSES

Painting is poetry which is seen and not heard, and poetry is a painting which is heard but not seen.

Leonardo da Vinci

"Beauty alone makes all the world happy, and every being forgets its limitations as long as it experiences her enchantment."

Friedrich von Schiller

"Repartee is what you wish you'd said."

Heywood Broun

"You have to know how to accept rejection and reject acceptance."

Ray Bradbury

"Never invest in any idea you can't illustrate with a crayon."

Peter Lynch

I hope you enjoyed these quotes and feel free to share them with your friends'

Photos of Burridge Workshop

Two weeks ago today I was in a class with Robert Burridge in Springfield, OR. The Emerald Art Center is a good facility for classes and my only gripe was they over sold it. 25-27 is to many, especially for a 3 day intensive workshop; it is hard on the instructor get ot each person. That said he did a great job teaching, motivating, and inspiring everyone.

 Bob getting set up.

One view of the class area

Some of the many starts drying,

The only two guys in the room.

It was a fun and intense 3 days and the ideas are still flying through my mind. If you are an artist who wants to loosen up or need a jump start for increasing your creativity you can learn a lot from Bob.
Thanks for looking and let me know what you think.

I was also accepted and will go to the Saratoga Rotary art fair in California on the 1st weekend in May.

Reworking

This 4 foot by 4 foot panel has a layered build up of paint, papers, and textual compounds. The basic color palette is the same but it changed from an abstracted figurative work to a non-objective landscape look.

4'x4' Mixed media on Panel v1

I was considering adding another collage element in the lower Right quadrant, but seeing how it looks in the photo verses in the studio, makes me say version 1 is better.

What do you think? Thanks for looking,

New Paintings

It was a busy week last week with the monthly critique on Tuesday, an other art group get together on Friday followed by a drive to Welches on Mt Hood for an evening painting demo. Here is what I worked on for just over and hour.

Red with Stub 12x12 Mixed Media

This mixed media piece was painted earlier in the week, these may be the start of another series.

 Punch 12x12 Mixed media

Another idea I have been working with is in this painting done in the days prior to critique, my search for a fresh take on the landscape.

 Willamette Sky 16x16 Mixed Media

Thanks for looking and let me know what you think of these paintings.

Busy Art Viewing Week

Last night was Hillsboro's first Tuesday art openings and the shows at G&V Walters Art Center were good to look at and the music was a treat too. The Sequoia Gallery had a fine show and it is always good talk with the artists exhibiting and in their studios. This is developing into a good scene with local arts supporters and artists mingling with fine art, craft and music.
First Thursday in Portland is always a mob scene and has many offerings their is a special show in Lake Oswego by the critique group Splash,
Opening Art Show Reception, Thurs., February 4, 6:00 P.M. – 7:30 P.M., Graham’s Book and Stationery, 460 Second St. Thirteen artists from the talented Splash! group and five invited artists have created images that came to them as they read The Whistling Season,by Ivan Doig.
I got that information from Ruth Armitage's blog post.
Last but not lest another fine artist Carolyn Cole is being featured on OPB's Art Beat seen locally on Thursdays at 8pm and repeats Sunday at 6pm, congratulations Carolyn.
The week of art openings ends withe the Patrons preview on Friday and Opening on Saturday evening of the annual Beaverton Showcase, featuring many fine local artists.
If you are in the area I encourage you get out and support your local hard working artists.
Thanks for looking, and tell me what you think about any of these shows.
